Change FTP Server's Port

I can easily access the native FTP Server on my N66U from WAN. I do not like to have port 21 open, how do I change the FTP Server port to 555 and close port 21?

I have already went into Virtual Server / Port Forwarding -> FTP Server Port and changed 2021 to 555

It still shows port 555 closed from WAN and cannot access the FTP Server.

I even tried it on 2021 but testing shows this port is closed.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure how your comment helps me.

BTW, port 555 was just an example.

I've done something similar to the following:

1. In the Port Forwarding section create a new entry:
Service Name: My FTP (as an example)
Port Range:555
Local IP: IP of your N66U
Local Port: 21
Protocol: TCP
Click +

2. Add a second port forwarding entry:
Service Name: Block21 (as an example)
Port Range 21
Local IP: to something in another IP range (192.168.10.1 for instance)
Local Port: 21
Protocol: TCP
Click +

3. Click Apply

Thanks Zirescu.

Does this mean there is a bug with the option to change the FTP port in the settings page?

On a separate note, does anyone know how to view the bandwidth rstats file in Windows?

Thanks.

Thanks Zirescu.

It might be a bug, I'm not sure that that setting ever worked based on other threads on the forums.

Thanks again Zirescu.

That post was made by RMerlin over 2 years ago, wonder if he forgot about this bug.

It's not a bug, it's just the UI is very confusingly documented. That port field is only for the FTP NAT helper, for cases where you run another FTP server on your LAN. It's not for the server port itself.

The only way to currently change the FTP port is to manually do it through user scripts and custom configuration.

Many thanks RMerlin for the explanation.

Can anyone share a script or custom configuration to change the FTP port? I am not advance enough to create one myself.

Thanks.

My work network blocked port 21 but i have some other ports available. My modem is AC52U. I must cahange the port 21. So far.. I can connect to modem via telnet and i can use some commands. Can someone just give me a clue which file i should edit to change that port. Thank you.

If they're blocking port 21 then you're probably not allowed to use FTP. Speak to your IT department about it.

I'ts not our IT department blocking it. And.. I'm the it dep. myself. Its blocked by a higher level department. We are under a fortiguard network. After some mil lit ar y c ou p thing happened in our country they restricted pretty much everything.

I don't know then. The RT-AC52U doesn't run Merlin's firmware because it's a completely different architecture.

The only way to make persistent changes would be to alter the NVRAM variables. If you SSH into the router and issue the following command it might give you some clue as to what NVRAM variables need to be changed (assuming that command works at all!).

nvram show | grep 21
