Changing Firmwares

Good morning. I currently run the Merlin firmware with no issues, but I like to experiment, would it be possible to switch to advanced-tomato / ddwrt without bricking my ac68u with Merlin firmware on then switch back to Merlin if need be?

You didn't say which model of router you have.

Have a read of Merlin at http://www.snbforums.com/threads/merlin-to-dd-wrt-to-merlin.30526/#post-239584 regarding DD-WRT.

As for Tomato, Merlin once wrote "Asuswrt-Merlin is based on Asuswrt, which was forked from Tomato." so that might be safer than DD-WRT. On the other hand, if it ain't broke.........

Have a search on this forum, especially for Tomato: the question appears not infrequently.

RTAC68U

I'd rather shy away from DDWRT, either Tomato / Merlin, but I would like to experiment with Tomato too!

I picked up a Linksys WRT54GL on ebay for £5 a few weeks back to use as a range extender. Have you thought about doing something similar which you could experiment with using Tomato, swapping it out with your RT-AC68U? Then, you can play as much as you like knowing your main router can be effortlessly hooked up again if things go wrong. Equally, you wouldn't be worried about breaking it. And then if you really like Tomato you could always put it on the Asus, and use the other one as an access point or range extender.

Don't really want to spend money tbh. I'm quite happy swapping FW, as long as i've got option61 I can pretty much get back on the internet effortlessly plus I'll do a backup of the current settings.

So I can put Tomato over the top of Merlin, well obviously going to stock so I've just got the mini http server so I can pick a .trx to load in to flash?

I put advanced tomato on my AC68 without issue when I got fed up with the 2.4GHz bug. To be honest I saw no advantages to running Tomato. Merlins firmware is as feature rich and has a nicer interface.
