New Around Here
I'm looking for a NAS to use at home. Following criteria are what I'm looking for:
  • Starting with 2 disk, expandable afterwards
  • Windows, Mac and Linux compatible
  • Easy to use for backup purposes (Time Machine?)
  • Download manager (BitTorrent, eDonkey)
  • Quiet!!!
  • Printserver (until my LAN-enabled printer arrives)
  • Possible to attach external HD for quick file copying
  • Gigabit LAN
  • Media server (I own a PS3)
  • Price < 600 € (without HDD)
  • Hackable?
After surfing the net and reading a lot of articles I came down to the following shortlist (which is not definitive!):
  • Thecus N4100PRO
  • QNAP TS-409
  • Synology DS-408
If I would have to go with the performance figures, I would choose the Synology DS-408. If I would go with the software, I'll probably choose the QNAP TS-409 (they seems to have a package-like installer system). Pricewise, the Thecus N4100PRO seems the deal...

It 's very hard to decide on which to choose. They all seems to have upsides and downsides and none seem to be perfect :p

I would like to hear from owners what they like about their choice and what not... I've about 1 month before I'm going to place the order.

Thanks in advance.
