I'm thinking of moving a lot of my workload over to my fileserver - but the 1Gb connection of my network is sometimes a bottleneck. I thought of using SSD in the fileserver, adding a USB3 2.5Gb to it and also the PC (some adapters claim linux compatibility) and binding them directly. Would this setup work? Can 2 machines be hot linked this way (without a switch)? Would the OS-es recognize this new, faster connection (besides the other network), when establishing connection?

Are you sure the file server cpu / MB can keep up with the faster nic ?
Will the usb adapter auto negotiate crossover/straight through for the cable ?

if they talk now, just unplug the cables and connect them together and see if it works as is. You can use a rj45 coupler for a test.
