Considerations for setting up external access

Hi,

I want to be able to transfer files to my NAS and access systems on the LAN from outside my LAN. My connection is via Comcast, my router is a Netgear WNDR 3700, and the NAS will be a Ready NAX Pro or NVX. Could someone walk me through the basic sets of setting up a secure file transfer and access mechanism? VPN?

Thanks,

Jerry

Fairly simple to do this actually.

You will need to setup what is called port forwarding.

On the WNDR3700 navigate down to Advanced -> Port Forwarding/Triggering.
Click Add custom service and fill out the following;

Service Name: (My NAS)
Protocol: TCP/UDP is fine.
Starting Port: 8080 ? Whatever port you access it locally on.
Ending Port: 8080 ? Again same port you access it internally on.
Server IP Address: The ip address of your nas box on your lan.

My internal nas is something like https://192.168.0.25:8080 This pulls up my QNAP's filemanager interface inside my network. Externally I would map it with the instructions above and the new link from the internet would be roughly the same but with your actual internet/external ip.

To locate your IP you can google what is my ip and click any of the links that come up. They'll give you your external ip.

PS. You may also want to consider a PogoPlug. (www.pogoplug.com) I've been using this since they launched in 2009 and have been extermely happy. This product creates a nas with a USB drive of your choice and requires no router configuration changes. Simple plug it into your router and follow the 5 minute instructions they give you. (click click save) basically.
However this will not provide the drive redundancy/failover that you would recieved with a regular nas. But for accessing your files securely and safely externally..this the easiest solution.

hope this helps.

He will still need to setup what I mentioned though if he wishes to access his files externally from outside his network.

Don't I need to also setup a dynDNS or something similar to get past my ISP changing my cable modem's address every so often?

Also, how does this allow me to access my systems?

How about encryption of the packets?

Readynas Remote does not require port forwarding, ports exposed to the WAN, static IP/dyndns, etc. In some cases you do achieve higher throughput when forwarding ports, but that depends on network topology and firewall used.
