Curiosity question about bootloader revs & how they are managed...

RT-AC86U #1
HW Rev 1.5
Manufacture Date: 2017
Manufacture location: (not specified)
Bootloader (CFE): 1.0.0.7

RT-AC86U #2
HW Rev 1.5
Manufacture Date: 2018
Manufacture location: China
Bootloader (CFE): 1.0.0.8

While they were produced in different locations and years, the HW Rev is the same, so that would mean they are the same...

Shouldn't the firmware upgrade process keep the bootloaders up to date too? I've see this with my RT-AC68Us over the years.

Not having any issues, just curious.

Bootloaders are rarely, if ever, updated on a router. Newer bootloaders might be created to support later hardware revisions (like different memory chips) but there would be no reason to apply that change to existing users devices. Doing so would just introduce the possibility of some users bricking their devices.

Bootloader upgrades are quite often only to support new hardware revisions, new types of flash memory, etc... Therefore they are very rarely updated. When they are, then they are updated by the firmware.
