DNS-320 Question...

Forts

New Around Here
Hi folks, new to the forum here and new to a D-Link DNS-320 which I just picked up yesterday. Here is my scenario: I have a 1.5tb drive which currently has about 900gigs of movies on it... it's currently in my main PC and shared across the network. I also have a spare, new 1tb drive that is unused. Knowing that the 320 want's to format the drives as soon as you insert them, I inserted the new drive and let it format... then spent 24 hours copying the 800 some odd gigs from the PC drive to the NAS. I then planned on putting the 1.5tb into the 320, let it format, then copy the movies back to it (I want to keep this drive dedicated to movies since it still has a decent chunk of free space left on it). But... to copy the movies back they still go thru the PC, and even with a gigabit connection this is extremely slow (I'm looking at likely 1 day and a half or 2 days to copy everything back). Is there a way to do a drive to drive copy within the NAS and bypass running everything thru the network? One would think there would be, but I can't find any way to do it.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Figured it out! I just scheduled a backup from drive 1 to drive 2 and away it goes... Much faster!

Look at the Local backup features. I believe there is the ability to backup to an internal share. Just make sure you set both drives up as separate volumes, i.e. "standard" volume type. and create a share folder on it.
