About a couple months ago I upgraded from FTTC to FTTP. Since then I noticed more drop outs though not sure if it is related to moving to FTTP. I do know my way around the router and so have been trying to diagnose the problem.
Here is the issue. I have an android set top box on which there are some apps that allows me to stream overseas dramas. After a while (the time is random could be 30 min or an hour but generally happens within 30min to the hour), the other devices on my network (eg my phone and desktop) would suddenly have super slow internet access. Sometimes loading websites would time out. However, there is no impact to the streaming on my android set top box. The streaming only uses at most about 10mbps and I am on a 500mbps FTTP plan so bandwidth shouldn't be an issue. I have about 20 devices on my network most of which are IOTs.
If I don't use the android set top box the other devices dont have any internet issues.
What I have done:
(a) I have power cycled the modem and router and changed the ethernet cables. Issue still persists.
(b) Updated the RT-AX82U to latest firmware and also the AX57m that acts as mesh node (via ethernet). Issue still persists
(c) I have tried two other routers (one a netgear R7000 running merlin and a TP link Deco s4) and the same issue exists. Therefore I am thinking its not a router issue.
(d) I have looked through the router's log but nothing obvious comes up.
(e) Contacted spintel and they have run some tests. They say my line is fine and its not a NBN issue.
I have noticed that if I go into the DNS server page of the router (I normally use 1.1.1.1) and change the DNS server to any other server (eg 8.8.8.8) and then "apply" then all the other devices that had super slow internet access would immediately have normal connection speed again. Therefore I am thinking its a DNS server issue but I am not sure why the android set top box has internet access but not the other devices. Maybe its infected and somehow overloading the router? I am thinking maybe cos the app on the set top box maybe utilises IP address and therefore does not not need a DNS server? I have probably tried 5 to 6 different DNS servers but the same issue persists.
Could it be that the android set top box is something causing the process on my router that manages the DNS server to crash and become unresponsive?
Anyone come across this issue before and/or all suggestions? Thanks!
