Does anyone have experience with setting up a DNS server for a LAN?
I would like a single server to act as the internal DNS server for our LAN.

Also, how do you know if there is a computer running DNS? Can I scan for it?

I have inherited a network with about 60 endpoints and would like to establish a DNS server.

Also, better understanding how DNS's work might help.

When I setup a network connection we put the ISP's DNS addresses in the DNS field.

I guess if I had an internal DNS server, I would add that to the list also??

Thank You Very Much

Microsoft's DNS server is a nice one. I am not sure I would set one up if you only wanted to use DNS. Routers will handle DNS what more do you need?

You may have a point.
I'm using a Sonicwall TZ500 which should have DNS. I have servers on the network that I can use. For instance I have a couple servers running 2012 that I could use.
I really want to establish one and make sure it is not also running anywhere else on the network.
What is a good source for information on this topic. Do you know of any books?

Thanks for your time in responding, I appreciate it.
