Dyn.com drops "remote update" on free accounts; must login, or upgrade to Pro.

This is a public service announcement. I do not work for DYN. I received this email today because I have two registered dynamic hosts.

Some people may have used bogus and throwaway email addresses during registration, so you may not yet be aware of this policy change.

If you have a dynamic hostname with dyndns.*, your router's "DDNS" features will stop working unless you upgrade to a paid account with DYN.com.

If you don't upgrade, you will have to update your IP address manually through the website every time your address changes, or at least once every 30 days, whichever comes first.

If you would like to maintain your free Dyn account, you must log into your account once a month. Note that using an update client will no longer suffice for this monthly login. You will still continue to get email alerts every 30 days if your email address is current. Failure to login once per month will result in expiration and loss of your hostname.

We understand that the possibility of resulting service interruptions may be frustrating, so we are offering an upgrade offer to VIP status (Dyn Pro) for just $10 USD for the first year. Under this status, monthly login is not required and service will remain uninterrupted.

Here's how you get this done in two easy steps:
1) Login to account.dyn.com.
2) Click here to add the Pro service to your cart at the $10 VIP rate. The discount will be applied upon checkout.

You can also use coupon code VIPUPGRADE during checkout to get service knocked down from $25/year to $10/year for the first year.

yeah, they say you must now login once a month to keep your DDNS alive. I wonder.

I did what they wanted and paid $10 for a year's service. There are other free services.

My DNS registrar could be but is not DynDNS. It's Hover.com and I have them linked to DynDNS for IP address updates. That costs $15/yr.

What price vanity.

At that price you could get your own domain... at a registrar that supports dyndns protocol.

I pay 99 SEK (about 11€ or $15) a year for my .se domain through Swedish registrar Loopia. Their Loopia DNS service has dynamic DNS support.

Re DynDNS ( need for) ... Despite having used about 4 different DOCSIS cable modems in 15 years, my public IP address has changed only once, said to be due to a network architecture change on their side.

But you never know.
