Expecting ping times to optimally configured router?

Expected ping times to optimally configured router?

I have two different RT-N66U's running Merlin 3.0.0.4.374.32 and am trying to figure out the expected range of wireless ping times to the router.

These are the ping times I'm seeing for my two wireless devices:

iPad running iOS 7.1: 20-27ms
Nexus 5 running Android 4.4.2 : 7-8 ms

Wired ping times are < 1ms

The numbers are the same for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks (there's nothing else in the 5GHz range). The connection is quite stable.

Are these numbers reasonable? What would the expected time for iOS and Android devices be w/Merlin firmware on the RT-N66U?

This is what I see:
Wired < 1 ms
WLAN between 30-85 ms

Absolutely normal.

One thing I noticed is that the ping time will vary greatly between clients.

Keep in mind that wireless is a TWO way things. The router is involved, but also your client. A high ping time can be caused by either end of the link.
