Firmware for RT-AC66U

I was planning to upgrade my router with the Merlin firmware, but didn't realised that this model is not supported any more.

Asus stock firmware (3.0.0.4.382_50470) is few moths newer than the Merlin version (RT-AC66U_380.70_0-2).

Is it safer to stick with the stock firmware, as it got some bug/vulnerability fixes?

Or can I use RT-AC88U_382.1_2?

Use stock Asus firmware or John's fork, both of which are kept up to date.
