Flashing router with programmer.

I have a question about flashing Asus Rt-ac86u with programmer. Is this a thing people do to update their devices just like motherboard and gpu users do? I know its used as a last resort to unbrick but what about routers? I dont have the tools myself but i visited a specialist two times. Once with mobo and second time with gpu. The standard question is if the image that i provide is the "whole image" or the "part of the image" that is beeing provided. Is the image on website the whole image or if you erase spi chip you are done? Just curious about how it works in routers for example my asus rtac86u
