I use QoS successfully here (but I don't have a network as busy as yours seems) on Merlin LTS fork . I established my configuration based on a discussion I read on the Freshtomato-mips forum.

My router is an RT-N66U.

I adjusted the "Up Bandwidth" to 75% of the minimum I observed (after several tests) and the "Down Bandwidth" to 85% of the minimum also observed. It is also these settings that give me (after many tests) the lowest average Bufferbloat results in ms, in the detailed results of "dslreports": http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/46361009
I have a regular rating of "A+" since I made these adjustments.

List of standards specified by the user:

TCP/UDP, DST port 1-5070, Transferred 0-1kb, class1 (Highest)
any, MAC address (VOIP interface), class2 (High)
TCP/UDP, DST port 1-5070, Transferred 0-64kb, class2 (High)
TCP/UDP, DST port 1-65535, Transferred 0-512kb, class3 (Average)
TCP/UDP, DST port 1-65535, Transferred 0-1024kb, class4 (Low)
TCP/UDP, DST port 1-65535, Transferred 1024kb+ class5 (Lowest)

Download and transmission limits:

1, 15%, 100%
2, 5%, 100%
3, 5%, 100%
4, 5%, 100%
5, 5%, 95% (Set as Default)

(same for both outbound and inbound)

Time for a fork release (no, I haven't abandoned it :) )...

Sorry for the length of time between releases, but I'm still 'upside down' with my father having some serious health problems. It was good to finally take some time for some 'fun' on the fork!
I haven't caught up with all the forum activity, so please forgive me if I missed something critical. Please repost with a fresh callout.

LATEST RELEASE: Update-38E3/38L3
28-February-2019
Merlin fork 374.43_38E3j9527

============================

Key Changes:
  • Component updates
    • curl: update to 7.64.0
    • nano: update to 3.2
    • openssl: update to 1.0.2r
    • openvpn: update to 2.4.7
    • dnsmasq: update to g162e5e0 snapshot
  • DoT updates
    • getdns: update to 1.50 final dist w/stubby 0.2.4
    • openssl-1.1.x: support for 1.1.1b
    • make: static link openssl 1.1.x for getdns/stubby
    • stubby: force tls1.3 and customer ciphers with openssl 1.1.x
Note that DoT/STUBBY is the only function currently using OpenSSL 1.1.1 I'm aware of the current Merlin alpha that extends OpenSSL 1.1.1 to other components, and will evaluate porting that work as the alpha progresses.

IMPORTANT Users of MIPS routers (N16/AC66/N66) currently running build 37 or earlier will need to save their JFFS space prior to the build 38 install, reformat JFFS after the install, then restore the saved JFFS. This is due to the increase in code size due to the static linking of OpenSSL 1.1.1 to the STUBBY code.
    -
  • Other fixes/updates
    • openvpn: (backport) remove unsupported ciphers from client
    • webui: do not add default http user for openvpn server on MIPS
    • webui: restart dnsmasq if changing state of sntp server
    • mutiple security/functional fixes backported from Merlin/dp111
    • lan: fix error in dfs enable for AC66/N66
Note that DFS channels on the original AC66U Rev A hardware are NOT supported. You must be AC66U Rev B hardware (not to be confused with the AC66U-B1) to enable the DFS channels.

@john9527, thanks for keeping up the good work!

A couple of questions about 38: can the setting (NVRAM) be saved/restored when upgrading from release 37 to 38? Also, would a factory default reset fix jffs formatting?

In general, when moving forward between fork levels there is no need to do a factory reset and you can also do a restore taken on an earlier level should you decide to do a factory reset (I'll highlight in the release notes any exception to this rule). Moving backwards can sometimes require a reset, such as moving from a level that supports changing the http port to a previous level that didn't.
Also, would a factory default reset fix jffs formatting?
No, you'll need to do this manually. I'd recommend the following steps on the MIPS based routers....

- take a backup of jffs (Administration > Restore/Save/Upload Setting)
- disable jffs (Administration > System) - Don't forget to hit Apply
- manually reboot
- load the new code via the gui
- re-enable jffs/reformat jffs at next boot/enable scripts (Administration > System) - Don't forget to hit Apply
- manually reboot
- restore the jffs backup (Administration > Restore/Save/Upload Setting)
- manually reboot

From 37EA to 38E3.
Format JFFS and restore like you said.

Thx!

Hi, can I use this release on Asus DSL-N16 modem/router device please ?

No.

Look at the first message in this thread...I believe the answer is no as DSL is not supported

Ok. Thank you.

Is there any other release that I can use it with my device ?

I'm not aware of any third party firmware for any DSL-based models, as these require dedicated support - just not worth the effort for a very small userbase. I didn't even know this model existed before.

Thank you for all the work you guys do on this. I'm not sure how many people help out on this project but thank you all so much. My asus n16 works like a dream and its thanks to you guys!! Awesome stuff..

Anyone have any issues with Amazon FireStick not working on 5G after version 38E3. Seems after the update on my AC66 I cannot watch trailers and most movies (just spins and wont load). I can switch the stick to 2G and it loads right up. Just started after updating to this firmware from version 37. I updated 3/1 night and today when using the Firestick is when I noticed the issue. Tried a factory default and no difference. Could be Amazon issue but wanted to see if others have seen this. Could just be a coincidence but.............. Otherwise other devices seem to be working fine. Figured I would ask before I try and downgrade back to 37 and see if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Try manually setting the 5GHz channel to 36. Some devices don't support DFS.
