FTP Server Issue RT-AC87U

fletchni

New Around Here
I am trying to speed up WAN access to my drives by using FTP (over an OpenVPN tunnel, of course).

I have only just got my AC87U and started using Merlin, but my attached USB drive I have had for a while, and it is formatted as HFS+.

I can make the FTP connection and browse open around 40% of the directories, but the remaining get an FTP error of "unable to change directory."

I've tried doing some research, and several other posts point to a Character Set issue; but I have it set to UTF-8, which should support my file and folder names.

I also cannot find any pattern to this issue. I only have additional characters such as "( ) & _ - ." and no accented characters. But I can open folders that have all these characters in their file names or folder names. It also doesn't seem to be related to a long list of files in a folder or a short list.

I have no issue connecting via SMB, only FTP.

Could there be a bug in the firmware? Are there any other ideas out there?

Thanks!

My first guess would be it's a file permission issue if it only happens on some directories. I have zero experience with HFS+, so I don't know how it handles permissions.

Thanks for your reply. I did consider that it might be permissions, but the volume is set as "owners enabled = no" and thus my understanding is that the router should ignore the ownership / permissions... and in any case the router sets its own permissions.

Furthermore, don't forget that as I said in my first post, that the Samba server works perfectly... all files & folders can be read from the very same USB attached drive.

So, I can't help feeling there is something wrong with the FTP server.

Thanks for your comments anyway.
