full network map blank

Windows 7, fully patched, intel nic to LAN

enabled LLDP in services-> no change
went to network adapter settings and disabled priority and VLAN-> now I get a little map PC->gateway->internet
go back and enable priority and VLAN-> still have a network map

What does priority and VLAN do to prevent me getting a map? I understand the map is cached so there really is no way for me to know if it's working now that I re-enabled priority and VLAN in the network adapter configuration settings.

Either way, cisco's network magic does a nice job of mapping the network so I dont know where windows 7 is broken in this regard. any discussion/thoughts?

It could be related to VLAN. With VLAN you can segregate your network (virtually) and devices so only certain devices can see each other and communicate. It could be that with VLAN turned on you are creating a separate network that only has your computer on it. If that is the case the network mapping service might not be able to find the other devices on the network. Just a guess though.
