Powered by Broadcom’s 64-bit quad-core BCM49408 CPU, the new Wireless AC Wave 2 access point platform doubles up on the 5 GHz channels and will be available in two different flavors:
  • Dual Band, Dual Concurrent (2.4 GHz+ 5 GHz or 5GHz +5 GHz)
  • Tri-Radio (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz + 5 GHz)
The new platform, named 5G-HD, is designed for high-traffic environments including campuses, airports and arenas. The key to 5G-HD’s potential success is being able to segregate slower traffic away from the faster 5 GHz channels, preventing the congestion caused by having older devices on the wireless network.

As a Wave 2 platform, 5G-HD supports MU-MIMO and utilizes Broadcom’s BCM43465 4x4 radios, offering support for 160 MHz channels and up to 8 concurrent connections for compatible devices when the AP is used in dual 5 GHz mode. Also, thanks to the radios, the new 5G-HD platform will also include Broadcom’s RangeBoost technology, providing up to 6dB of link margin at range.

The BCM49408 and 5G-HD platforms are currently in the sampling phase of development.
