I've just been given a Trendnet TEG-30284 as a gift.

How do I go about best using this thing? The settings options are quite beyond my knowledge.

First thing I would suggest is to get the firmware up to date and factory reset it.

It's a nice switch, and having the four SFP ports can be handy.

It would just work like any other old switch if you don't change any settings, assuming none of the settings have been changed already.
It should simply just work.
