Gnuton RT-AX95Q_3004_388.10_2-gnuton1 upgrade unsuccessful

I have a refurbished v1 XT8 (on the label, it's written HW Ver.:1.0
It's currently running stock firmware 3.0.0.4.388_25186-gf0ded22

When I try to switch to merlin by uploading the firmware RT-AX95Q_3004_388.10_2-gnuton1_puresqubi.w I get an error "Firmware upgrade unsuccessful. This may result from incorrect image or error transmission. Please check the version of firmware and try again."

What could be causing this?

If you’re certain it’s the correct file AND THAT YOU HAVE TEMPORARILY REMOVED ANY USB IN THE DEVICE, then try these, in order

1. Upgrade to latest stock, retry FW update
2. Take screenshots of your settings, HARD (WPS) reset it, set up from scratch to a MINIMUM install, update FW. Do NOT save a config and try to reupload that. Lastly, enter the saved settings by hand.
3. Finally. Check out ASUS Firmware Restoration Tool. You may be able to get it uploaded that way.

Nevermind, I'm a complete idiot. I have an ET8 and not an XT8. Thanks for your help @jksmurf
