Good use for an old NAS

Hi all.

I had a (not so old) DS413 that physically died and I'm getting a new NAS.
After a get the DS413 RMA, what is a good use for it after a bigger (should be better) NAS comes?

I want to use the RMAed DS413 as local storage drive that's 100% offline, usually turned off, and safe from Internet threats.

Or use 413 as JDOB / non-raid backup for the new NAS?

Any other or better ideas?

thanks!
never had this problem before :)

I have a really old Airnet101 NAS. Slow. But I use it on the LAN as an extra backup place for VIP files. Just 500G single bay.
It's out of sight too.

Thanks for the post!

But how to keep your Airnet away from Internet threats? (even if there is no direct Internet access)
I'm guessing the firmware & OS wasn't updated for a long time and may be vulnerable to new attacks.

My router doesn't open any ports through to allow someone to get NATed onto the LAN and access PCs, NASes, etc. My router is doing this as do most. Can't attack it from the Internet. And my WiFi is well secured.

It doesn't make it 100% secure, but you could have it set to only wake rarely, not sure on Synolgy OS's flexibility, say once a week or once a month and then take a back-up from your primary storage and/or NAS and then power itself back-off.

At least with a full on desktop (ACPI feature supported), you can always set a task for a wake timer to wake the computer from S5/full off once a month, disable WOL from S5 for the network card and do a monthly back-up that way. Doesn't mean a virus or something else couldn't kill it within that little window, but it does give you a resonable probability of catching any virus that might have infected your computer/NAS/Network before it has a chance to infect the back-up NAS.

That is close to as secure as USB cold storage with maybe the exception that the back-up NAS is a little more vulnerable to environmental probably while still connected and off (IE electrical surge over power/network cabling).

Sorry, but I have to say that I don't see any of those points as being sensible.

If the concern is things like viruses, having any connected storage on your network makes it vulnerable. So having it disconnected from the network (or in this case connected, but effectively powered off) prevents any data corruption from being able to occur.
