Hey there everyone,
So I've read on here & other places that the new Seagate 1.5tb drives have been "de-listed" as compatible with a lot of NAS devices -- drobo, netgear, synology, etc (thanks to claykin for the heads-up on this).
Out of curiosity, I called the drobo company to ask about the status of the drives with them, and the very helpful (I say 'helpful', since she actually spoke understandable english, unlike the d-link tech support...) woman I spoke with said that if Seagate addressed an issue via FIRMWARE of their drives, then the 1.5tb drives would be "back" on the compatibility list.
I took note of this for several reasons:
1) A buddy bought a drobo, drobo share, and FOUR 1.5tb seagate drives -- and before he bought everything, he called their company to ensure the drives would work. They said 'yes', he purchased everything...and two weeks later they now "took them off" the compatibility list.
2) I bought 2 of the drives myself, to use first in a D-Link (didn't work, but that's as much due to the unit as anything else), and now maybe the drobo...up until I read they're no longer compatible.
My main question is: if Seagate addresses this problem, would the firmware be applied straight to the drives themselves via a typical firmware/software update? I don't know how that would work when the drives are in a NAS enclosure and such? AND, does a firmware update for a hard drive even work like that, or would they have to produce a revision in the physical layout/production of the hard drive, with early-adopters SOL?
Sorry for my ignorance; never heard of a HARD DRIVE firmware update before. I'll have to eat a $56 restocking fee if I opt to RMA my drives, so if they're likely to be approved sometime soon, I'd like to keep them...
Thanks for your input -- and sorry for the long post!
