Help with install and issues

I just upgraded to the N66U and immediately installed Merlin's latest build.

Its all running well but I have some wierd things happening and wondered if someone smarter than me can point me in the right direction.

Background: upgraded from Netgear WNDR3700 v1. Used same SSID as old router and tried to configure other things the same. Opened two ports for forwarding for remote access for server (port 3389) and VPN to win 7 (port 1723)

Issues:
1. No apple client on the wireless network can download any apps (iphone, ipad, ipod). Its as if whatever port used is blocked. But I turned off the routers firewall but that didn't help. I have been able to update through tethering to cellular network subsequently so its not the clients. Does anyone have a suggestion where I should look?

2. I am using dyndns to access my server. I use VPN setup on the win 7 machine. So I connect to xxx.dyndns.org and then forwarded to port 1723. Strange thing is that I can only do this if on the local network, although I am first directing my VPN request to xxx.dyndns.org. If I attempt to connect to my VPN from outside the network, such as on 3G it doesn't go through - it doesn't even get to authentication stage. I assume I still need to do the port forwarding as I want it to go to my server's IP on my lan. I also have the PPTP VPN passthrough enabled on the other tab.

I am finding this quite confusing and would appreciate any suggestions or insights as to what I am doing wrong.

Try using a different SSID to ensure that your clients aren't trying to reuse the profile created for the old router. If it still fails, search on Google for "Asuswrt Apple 802.11d". There should be a thread either here or on the Asus VIP forums with tips specific to Apple devices.

Do not forward port 1723. Forwarding means redirecting traffic to a computer on the LAN. The server runs on the router itself, so that traffic must not be forwarded beyond the router. The router will take care of opening the firewall port automatically (which is different from port forwarding).

update 1.5 mths later. I updated my router to Merlin's latest firmware and took it back to factory settings. This appeared to do the trick and for the last 3 weeks its all been good. But then my cable provider had a some network issues and post that the old problem on the Asus with clients stalling on downloads started up again. After spending some days troubleshooting I gave up and connected a Netgear WNDR 3700 and all was good. So I have relegated the Asus as an access point. (which it does ok). There (in my case) obviously some issue that the Asus is sensitive to but I don't have the time to find out what could be causing the problem. So far, two other routers have been used as substitutes without experiencing the same. Wish I had more time but lifes too short to work it out
