Homegroup issues with RT-N66U

New Around Here
Hi,

I recently purchased a RT-N66U router and am having homegroup issues with 2 Windows 8 computers. My laptop is connected via Wireless-N while my desktop is using Gigabit Ethernet. I am on the 3.0.0.270.24 Merlin firmware.

Basically, when I create a homegroup on my desktop and my laptop joins it, the homegroups and the shared folders can be seen on both computers; but when I click on any desktop shared folder on my laptop, nothing happens. However, I can access my laptop shared folders on my desktop. Conversely, when I create the homegroup using my laptop, I can access my desktop shared folders on my laptop but not vice versa.

When I restart my laptop while the desktop is on, my laptop can now access desktop shared folders, but not vice versa. COnversely, if I restart my desktop with my laptop on, my desktop can access laptop shared folders but not vice versa.

Both PCs are able to ping each other and they have the same username and no password. PReviously, when I connected Ethernet to my laptop both computers can access each other without any problems.

The strange thing is that conventional workgroups work without any problem. Could this be a problem with IPv6 on the router?

I have followed all the troubleshooting steps I've managed to Googled so far, and I have tried both enabling and disabling Windows Firewall but to no avail.

Has anyone managed to get N66U to work with homegroups so far? I'm at my wits end :(

Hi,

I had a smilare problem with one of my Windows 7 laptops - seams to be a laptop problem with the Master Browser functionallity.

Only after I hacked the registry on the laptop to force Windows to surrender to the Router as THE Master Browser, things are running smooth.

Can you check your routers syslog.log (on the web interface Systel Log and General Log tab) for any Master Browser messages?

With kind regards
Joe
