I have setup an OpenVPN server and it works fine. My question: Is it possible to remove the router login user from the list of VPN users. Reason for this is that I don't want to have a too complicated username/password for the router login user. (The router can only be managed from the LAN)

My router is an ASUS RT-N66U with Asuswrt-Merlin firmware 380.63_2.

That's not possible, that account is hardcoded (same with SMB/FTP).

You can however add different users for you to use with OpenVPN, and simply not use the default admin account.

I thought so

Is it in OpenVPN it's hardcoded or in the Asuswrt-Merlin firmware?

User-based authentication uses PAM, which will authenticate against any system user that exists in passwd - it's not a separate list of users dedicated to OpenVPN. Since the admin user exists at the system level, it automatically gets accepted by the PAM authentication plugin. That's why it gets shown on the webui.
