From a totally non-professional side , it does seem a bit 'overkill' to have a PC running the VPN routing when the router can do the donkeywork for you and free up the PC.

true, the reason i did it this way was because i did not know that i can have vpn pptp client install on this router.

Anyway, I followed this tutorial and get Fractal build DD-WRT on my router.

I set up the pptp server and client as following

VPN to router works great but there is no way i can tell if my VPN client works or not. I still can't see the SQL server from my remote PC

Can anyone point out what i am missing or my setting is wrong?

Thanks

Initially I would suggest you need a static route on the remote PC for the 192.168.10.x subnet to be via the RT-N66U gateway otherwise it will just send the packet to its local default gateway (local internet connection)

When the packet gets to the ASUS it will unwrap the encapsulated packet and look for the destination, which in theory it will then pass to the VPN client connection for onward routing (so the ASUS will now be your source MAC address). If its handling the NAT properly between the VPN connections , it should be ok - but for further troubleshooting, I would initially plug in a machine directly to the ASUS and prove you can see the SQL server over that connection. What I'm not sure will happen is how the ASUS will handle re-encapsulating the packet back to the remote connection...
