I post this because it annoyed me for a long time, and hopefully this post works for others with this seemingly simple issue.

Sometimes for whatever reason you have a wired and a wireless connection but want the wireless connection to take precedence.

Windows uses the speed of each connection to calculate which to use- but it does not take any "real world" data into account, only the speed associated with the LAN connection.

To get wireless over wired, you can go into the properties of your ethernet adapter driver and set the connection to 10 Mbps. For most users, this will result in your wireless connection taking precedence over the wired.

For me, this results in a doubling of my internet speed.

right click on the network connectivity icon in your task bar

then go to open Network and Sharing Center

then go to Change adapter settings

Then click on Organize > Layout > Menu Bar

Then click on Advanced > Advanced Settings

You can then adjust the priority of each network adapter. The wired connection is generally at the top, but you can move your wifi adapter up there if you want it to use that (not sure why you would want to do that, it is pretty much always slower than Ethernet)

You doubled your internet speed over lan wired connection??

I didn't quite understand what he meant by that.

If forcing the Ethernet adapter to use a slower speed, actually causes the throughput to improve, then it means that a bad cable was being used.
