I can still access my router via a deregistered DDNS

If you have a way to change your WAN IP (depending on ISP connection type) the old DDNS record will become unusable right away.
 
If your concern is that your router GUI is accessible via WAN, you need to disable the GUI being made available via WAN interface. Otherwise it will still be open via browsing to your IP even after your DDNS gets de-registered. You need to set the GUI settings to only be accessible via the LAN if that's what you want.
