I want to Build a ADSL Modem / Router / Computer

Possum

New Around Here
Hi

I want to see if I can build an always on Green computer that is an

ADSL Modem / Router / Computer

This computer would be low wattage and always on..

If such a device exist I would like to know about it.

If it does not how would you build it. I somehow feel it won't be as easy as putting a couple of cards in a Mini ITX case..

How would you do it. ?

Thank you..

build? There are many inexpensive ones in the HTPC market. Zotac and lots of others as you can see by searching, say, newegg.com.

The router/modem would be commonplace items.

Building a router is really straight-forward, bunch of folks here have done it. There is a DIY Article detailing how, using PFSense on an Atom platform, lays it out pretty cleanly. There are several other distro's that can also be used (Astaro, ClearOS, etc)

Building your own ADSL modem, that would be a challenge, know how to etch a board? Luckily you can get a PCI card that Linux/FreeBSD that will handle the ADSL modem duties.

What is cool is with the distros you get all kinds of other functionality (like IDS) for free.

One could always look at a fit-PC3 and get the dudes to build you a spec combination as they say it's 'front' panel is modular and you request the configuration outside of the defaults.

Just get a couple of Ethernets negating a couple of USB.

Then get a USB ADSL2/VDSL2 (PPPoA/PPPoE) dongle.

Then with all the time and effort you've saved you could go outside and sit under a tree and read a book.
