I have this same router and unless things have changed i could not put merlinwrt on it, however you can put tomato shibby firmware on it to have the ability to use up to 2 vpn clients in fact I just updated the firmware to tomato-K26-1.28.RT-N5x-MIPSR2-140-Max and it works fine I have 1 client running PIA Toronto the Other Nord for UK.

Main feature i was want is to monitor traffic per device, and Tomato by shibby don't do that , you need to install a script or something and i think that requires a USB port
