In consternation - new firmware

I don't know about WireGuard, but multiple VPN clients including from different countries landing straight on your main network doesn't sound right to me.

I likewise have seen this notice for the most recent firmware for XT8 and other ASUS routers. I have not installed it yet. I also have made a lot of manual updates, routing rules, etc, so I do not want to perform a factory reset unless I can restore my backed-up configuration. Would backing up the settings, perform the factory reset, and restore the settings work, keeping their enhanced security updates?

Been asked a few time before. RMerlin (developer of the Asus-Merlin firmware) responded this way to such a question.
Reloading that config will completely overwrite the changes done by the factory default reset. So you'd be back to the same point as before.
