Installing Merlin Firmware

Hi,
I currently have two RT-AC86U routers, one as the main router and the other as a mesh node.
My question, installing Merlin firmware do I install on both devices or just on the main router? Does Merlin firmware work ok on a mesh node?

Tyically the Mesh devices are left on ASus Native firmware and the main router uses Merlin firmware. T
