Like the title says, I'm having issues with smart connect on my RT-AC5300. This same thing happened to me when the RT-AC3200 first came out. Don't know why ASUS is having such a hard time figuring out their latest triband release when they seem to have got it working on the RT-AC3200.
Anyway, here's the issue. I have a very large amount of mixed clients in my home. Some are 2.4GHz only capable, some are dual band 802.11n capable, and others are 802.11ac capable. I want to seperate out my 802.11n and 802.11ac clients between the two 5GHz bands so 5GHz-1 only allows 802.11n clients and 5GHz-2 only allows 802.11ac clients. The RT-AC3200 did this perfectly. The RT-AC5300, not so much.
With smart connect enabled, most clients get tossed to 5GHz-1. Very few 802.11ac clients successfully connect to 5GHz-2. There's also this weird issue where clients that try to connect to 5GHz-2 only last on that band for about 10 to 30 seconds then give up and completely reject all 3 frequencies unless I toggle Wi-Fi off and then on via the device. Even if I do that, however, the router just tosses the device to 5GHz-1.
Just to save some time, I am on the latest firmware, I have performed a full factory reset multiple times without uploading any backups, and I won't disable smart connect for manual connection and have 3 seperate SSIDs. Smart connect is one of the main reasons I purchased this. If anyone from ASUS happens to read this, please release an update to fix this. For anyone else reading this, is there anything I can do on my end to correct this issue? Thanks!
