I just got my Asus N66U from Amazon. I gave the 2.4GHz and 5GHz band different names, but the same password. I noticed that the router gets pretty hot. I haven't turned on the QoS.

Does anyone have an tips or tricks for me?

Yes. Goto asus website for rt-n66u and download latest firmware.

Then use basic troubleshooting steps in link below if you have any problems.

Edit: I use the little plastic stand that comes in box. Runs relatively cool. But these newer routers run warmer than older routers. That's normal. And you don't have to use the stand. It'll be fine. Also, read your manual which can found on asus website.

The router downloaded the newest firmware automatically when I opened the management stuff. I have the channel width set to automatic for both bands. Is there a reason I would want to change that?

Generally, you'll have less problems on 2.4 ghz if you set width to 20 MHz. But it's not mandatory.

It's fine to leave 5 ghz set to automatic width.

Router runs hot it's normal. Mine is a constant 131 degrees F. Running 2 years now with no issues.

For help with heat problems, if you're not already using the stand that came with the router, try that. The router ends up slightly inclined from vertical, and gets much better air circulation for ventilation than having it sitting horizontally on a flat surface. I don't find that my router gets very hot using the stand.

Turn down the wireless signal to around 40mW instad of the default 80mW.

Or power down the router...

Anyway, in case of high temperatures: use the stand that comes with the router and put it in an open space, not inside a locker.
It all depends on the environment temperature, home routers are designed for average room temperatures of 20 dg C / 70 deg F, the RT-N66U specification say 0-40 deg C / 32-104 deg F.
