How would we know if our iot are being used?
If you can look at your router uplink bandwidth, that's the easiest way.
Or just look at your router's internet light. If it's blinking like crazy and you aren't doing anything, something may be up.

I have about 35 devices online at the moment so the routers light is always blinking. Just taking a short look at outgoing traffic I’m averaging 30 KB/s.
 
With Asuswrt the easiest is to look at the first page of the Adaptive QoS page. It will show you realtime traffic for each individual devices. Enabling Apps Analysis on that page will even tell you which type of traffic is generated by each devices.
