Media Server Problem - HD shuts down during scan

New Around Here
I'm having a weird issue with the media server function on this router. First off, I have been using the RT-N16 for a few years now, with the Tomato firmware. I've never had an issue with the media server on the RT-N16 - I would attach an USB hard drive, it would detect the media, and I can watch it on my PC or WD TV Live.

On the 66u however, the USB hard drive shuts down every time the router scans the media. I'm not sure what to do here as I tried different hard drives and every time it shuts down the hard drive. I've bypassed this issue by plugging my RT-N16 into the 66u, essentially using the RT-N16 as an access point, and plugging the USB drives into the N16. Although the solution I've concocted works, I would prefer to not run two routers.

Any thoughts on what may be causing the hard drive shutdowns?

BTW, anyone know if the router supports 4 tb USB hard drives?

Thanks!!

Update:

I flashed the firmware to Merlins' ASUSWrt and now the scan will complete without crashing. The only bummer is that it doesn't seem to scan multiple drives automatically (I have to manually select each one).

Does anyone here know whether the "playlist" is saved automatically or does it have to re-scan every time? Also, how do I "tell" the router that I copied something new onto the drive? I would hate to rescan the hard drive every single time I copy a new media file onto it.

I'm thinking I should stick to my old setup with the RT-N16. Like they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Thanks again!

Weird. Because it works fine for me on Asus .354 firmware using a 3TB HD attached to the router. I also have a WD TV Live.

On the WD TV Live I access the HD attached to the router via Windows Shares. On my PC or tablets, I access the HD attached to the router via AiCloud and everything works perfect.

If your hdd is ext3 formatted, then new media files are scanned instantly and available for streaming.
If you want to see where is minidlna database located, search for minidlna.conf
cd /
find -name minidlna.conf
but you can't modify nothing there because on every router reboot the settings will be lost, for that you can use custom config files or disable minidlna from router ui and install optware or entware minidlna package and you will have full control over minidlna.conf

Thanks TeHashX. Sounds like a pain in the butt, not to mention my hard drives are not ext3 formatted. On my old setup with Tomato on the RT-N16, all I had to do was enable media server, ftp to my drive via filezilla, change the directory names of the media I copied, and the new files will pop up shortly. Wish a similar trick could work on this router.

Maybe someone will make Tomato for the AC66...
