Merlin and non Merlin firmware

I just purchased a zenwifi XT8. I have it connected to an ac86u with Merlin firmware as an ai mesh node. It is ok to leave the Merlin fm on the ac86u or should I switch it to stock firmware?

It is OK but the Asus firmware is more up to date.

I run the latest Merlin version on my router with XT8s and it works like a charm. I like Merlin primarily for the VPN director stuff which makes VPN control a breeze.
