I'm sure you will get lots of different opinions. :)

IMO, windows is not secure. Period. So anything has to be better.

It also depends on what you think a VPN is doing to "protect" you.

Running a VPN on your router gives you more control to ensure traffic is encrypted or else it doesn't make it to the outside world.
 
A VPN offers no protection.

What are you trying to secure your Windows 10 PC against? Yourself? Your ISP? Your government?
  • Remove the WiFi card (if one is installed).
  • Weld the case shut.
  • Take pliers to the USB ports that don't connect the keyboard and mouse and mangle them thoroughly.
  • Do the same to the LAN port.
  • Do not connect to the internet via any means.
  • For maximum protection, remove the keyboard and mouse cables and destroy those ports too.
Even with all the above; your data can still be hacked. If someone wants what's on your computer bad enough. :)
