My SIP based Android app doesn't work with my RT-N66U

Hi.

This may be a showstopper for me: My SIP based application (Voxofon for Android) which I need for work doesn't work with the RT-N66U. I have tried all available firmware, also Merlin, with "sip passthrough" enabled, but I am not able to connect. I tried with my old router and it connects without problems. Is it anything I can try to get this to work?

SIP passthrough must be enabled when using a client.

(EDIT: the description on the webui is confusing. It's not really a passthrough, it's a NAT helper. Edited to clarify.)

SIP passthrough must be disabled when using a client. That option is for when you are running a SIP server (for instance, Asterisk).

Thanks. I tried with SIP passthrough disabled but it still doesn't work. I see this in the log:

udp 10.0.0.150:40189 174.142.39.4:5070 UNREPLIED
udp 10.0.0.150:35065 174.142.39.4:5070 UNREPLIED

Those entries are connected to the SIP account. Any ideas?

The Voxofon app is based on CSipSimple a commonly used Android SIP app.

Make sure you didn't configure any port forward for SIP. SIP clients should all be able to deal with NAT (you might need to enable support for it first in the client).

I have never used CSipSimple, but my Cisco ATA (which works as a client) has no problem connecting with VoIP.ms.

Perhaps make sure you phone is really connected to Wifi and not to 3G/4G.

Also try rebooting the router after you disabled SIP Passthrough, to be totally sure the module is no longer active.

EDIT: Also try a different SIP clients. Some Android phones even come with native SIP support.

Thanks again. I can not use other SIP clients since the service is Voxofon which comes with a built in SIP client (CsipSimple). If I could use another client it would be great. We make all our international calls using Voxofon so I have to make it works somehow. Again, I tried to connect through two other routhers (a D-Link and a Pace) and it connects without problems to the same Internet connection. As soon as I hook up the Asus and try I get nothing.
All I end up with is this in the connection log:

udp 10.0.0.150:46097 174.142.39.4:5070 UNREPLIED

I know this connection is from Voxofon since the IP and port is what they use.

I guess I am out of luck on this one?

Try putting your rt-n66u in to ap mode and see if it works....for curiosity sake.

You're probably going to have to give more information on your uverse router. I assume you have two nats. Are you using DMZ ?

There's a few guides on the google on how to configure a uverse router with an Asus router.

The U-Verse router is a Pace 5031NV. The Asus is set up in a DMZ on the Pace. This is how I had it set up with my old router, a D-Link which I use now to compare. I can place sip calls without problems using the old router, but with the Asus it times out. I have set it up exactly how I had it with the D-Link and there's not many options on the Pace other than the DMZ and a simple firewall which I have disabled according to guides. I have also tried to connect using wifi from the Pace which also works.

I tried connecting the Asus as an AP and the SIP calling from Voxofon works. Then I set it back in router mode and the SIP calls times out.

Are you using ipv6 on the pace? IPv6 on the Asus?

What happens if you disable ipv6 on both routers and then power cycle both routers for 30 seconds?

This is very interesting and I bet if this can be solved it will also solve the streaming music to android devices problem as well.

It would be interesting to know is this some bad Pace modem to Asus to android mojo, or is it any Broadcom router w/ same chipset, would a different DSL/Uverse modem provoke similar problems, etc. Something with DNS caching/resolving between those 3 items hiccuping - I don't know. But there has got to be others out there with similar problems that have isolated where this hiccup is. I wonder if your SIP client uses UDP (I'm assuming the streaming music does) and maybe there is a glitch in how UDP is flowing through? I have no idea, but it would be interesting to see what commonality all of your ailments have in common and then start looking for people with similar hardware and usage and see who's doing what right.

On the Pace there's no setting for IPv6 and on the Asus it's disabled.

I keep getting this one in the logs:

udp 10.0.0.150:46097 174.142.39.4:5070 UNREPLIED

which is the port set for the SIP account by Voxofon, and yes it says udp. I do not even know where to start looking, but what can be read out of the fact that there's no such problem when I use the Asus as an AP?

Ok. What is the IP address of your Asus router (the default IP address is 192.168.1.1) ?

What is the local IP address of your dlink router ? 192.168 ?

Try changing the IP address of the Asus router to 192.168.9.1

The Asus is 10.0.0.1
The D-Link is 10.0.0.1
The Pace U-Verse modem/router is 192.168.1.254

I found this in another forum:

<snip>
For the Asus RT-N56U there is only one way of disable the SIP ALG function with the latest firmware.
Activate the telnet function of the router and do it by hand.

nvram set nf_sip=0
nvram commit
reboot

That's it the SIP ALG should be disable.

This should solve alot of head ache. Not only sip registration.
</snip>

Is this something I could try? Not sure how to do telnet on the router though.

I found this in another forum:

nvram set nf_sip=0
nvram commit
reboot

I did that when i had problems with my SIP. But my problem was a bit different. I used native SIP client in JB 4.2.2 and connected to IPPI free SIP server. The problem was that other side can hear me but not me. Registration and receiving calls were ok. After applaying this command i started to hear other side.

Thanks. In my case the problem is that registration doesn't happen. It times out.

I am almost embarrassed, but I went to the Pace and took the Asus out of the DMZ, rebooted it and added the Asus back in. SIP calls work! I have no idea how this can make a difference, but it did. So it seems that I needed to disable SIP passththrough in the Asus, then remove it from the DMZ on the Pace, reboot the Pace and put the Asus back in the DMZ. Now off to see if this has affected my streaming problems also. Thank you all for helping.

P.S. I am not sure why I spend so much time on this knowing I will be on Cable in a couple of weeks. Oh well... :)

Have you tested the music streaming issue from the other thread/dilemma? Glad you got this one knocked out though, and if the streaming doesn't work I'd not put much more time into it till you switch out of uverse either! ;)

Hopefully when you get cable, you will demand a plain dumb bridge cable modem and won't have so many problems. There's lots of people that have problems when they use modem/router combos issued by their ISP.

The folks that run plain modems don't seem to have as many problems.

This Pace modem seems pretty good, but it's the same limited firmware and it is U-Verse, so no real bridging possible. It was all that was available before Suddenlink came along. I can't wait!

I have asked for a simple modem that can be bridged. The rep told that would not be a problem.
