Let me start off by saying I thought I knew what I wanted until I started reading all of the great information on this site. Now I have some questions resulting from the research:
1. I was going to go with a 4 bay (4x2TB) synology or QNAP, likely using RAID 1...giving me 4 TB for data and 4 TB for backup
- with RAID 1...if the NAS died could I simply take the 2 HD and put them in any enclosure or would I need to have another NAS of the same type to be able to recover
- under this scenario having a hot-swappable drive is important as if I had any of the 4 drives go down I could simply swap out one drive and put in a new drive of the equal size and I could keep going without missing a beat correct?
2. then I read about RAID not being true back up and the suggestion for NAS to NAS back...this lead me to the idea of getting 2 x 2 Bay (each 2 x 2TB) NAS drives...both located in my home but in different locations...I could then use RAID 0 for each NAS, and have the backup done every x hours (RAID 0 question...
- will a RAID 0 NAS act like a single 4TB drive or is there something else that I should be thinking about, would I be better off not using any RAID and just have 2 x 2TB drives in each NAS).
-since both Synology and QNAP use rsync, does either of these have a better implementation for NAS to NAS backup?
- under this scenario, how would I recover from one drive going down (with RAID 0 I'm not sure, with no RAID I'm assuming that I would lose all data on that drive since the back up and I could take the backup drive and swap it into the primary NAS, replacing the backup...as I assume a backup in this scenario would be an exact match of the primary.
3. instead of the 2nd NAS would I be better off subscribing to an offsite backup service...or is the cost prohibitive for home use
I know there is a lot of questions hopefully someone can help.
Thank you
