NAS box with Linux OS +ssh +USB

New Around Here
Hi group,

I'm looking for a NAS box with a Linux OS and SSH access. Also a few USB ports. Low power and cost. Hot plugable would be nice.

I purchased a Sabio CN200 ($160) but it does not have SSH enabled and I can't get the Open Source to compile. Also can't figure out how to modify the boot image. No help from Sabio other than the source code.

I would like to get a unit that I can modify the OS to include my Open Source backup system ( to be written ).

the readynas line you can optionally enable ssh access.

they use a (customized) debian based linux os and have a SDK and forum available for user created addons.

you would most likely want an x86 based device (ultra/nvx/pro) for performance and portability, although they are not the cheapest option.

I have 3 readynas devices and they have been dependable for me

The iomega ix2-200 and the 4 bay model both have a hack to enable ssh access. I have the ix2-200 and have added a few small apps to the kernel, there is a discussion in here about it I believe.
The drives are not hot-swappable.
