I am updating a hotspot at a campground.
I have four static ip's available.
There are three access points that maintain connections.
I was thinking about wan balancing.
Using an RV042, setting this to do the front end work for the wan.
Then using a server with either untangle or pfsense maybe even smoothwall
to limit bandwidth, and a small amount of content filtering.
The primary access point can have from 75 users to over a 100 during peak times.
One access point services an overnight area, where we have only about 20 to 30 users any given day.
The last access point services a difficult area with many Tree's Pines.
That is were I ues a one watt. Bout 50 users thers any given time.
This is a rural area, broadband is supplied by frontier. Only real game in town.
And the most that is offered is 3 meg connections.
So with all this in mind as well the budget is very limited as well, so as always someone wants the world by does not have the means to support it.
Here are my thoughts.
Will the RV042 stand up to demand, if its only function is to do wan balancing?
Or is it effective enough to not only handle the wan but limit per user bandwith caps?
When I say caps I mean that each user have a maximum bandwidth availible at lets say 512 kbs, and limit concurrent sessions to maybe 40.
Another question:
Of the distro's available Untangle, Pfsense,Clearos, smoothwall which is going to install and configure the easiest with out hardware issues at install.
I have been trying all of them on different hardware. Untangle always seems to install on what ever I through at it. But I think bandwith management is not free.
Knowing that with so many users the least amount of work I require of each network piece, the less likely to have issues.
Like my access points, I uses them basically as a radio for connection and let the servers do all the dhcp and such.
Captive portal, Do you think that this is a better way to enforce bandwidth policies?
