NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 - Extended Network

Good evening. I'm kinda new to this so plz forgive the n00bie question . Recently we just moved into a house that does not have a wired network, so I have to resort to wireless. Instead of renting a cable modem, I decided to buy the above cable modem / wireless router. Things have been great but I'd like to extend my WiFi network with an ASUS RT-AC68P that I have. After resetting the ASUS router to factory defaults, I configured it as a repeater. It 'joins' the network but for the life of me, I can't figure out why I can not gain internet access from any of the networks - 2G / 5G. I've tried the stock firmware on the Asus as well as Merlin with no luck. I really want to expand my network without having to buy new hardware. Tks in advance..

What firmware is installed on the routers? What options and features are enabled on each?

When you switched between different firmware and forks (Asus, RMerlin and back), afterwards, did you do a full reset to factory defaults followed by a minimal and manual install?

Thanks for the quick reply. The Netgear FW is - V1.01.23 / and the Asus FW is - 380.63_2 (Merlin) .. I'm sure that I did a full reset but I'll look at the links you provided... TY
