Network help

Cryomag22

New Around Here
I have a small home network consisting of a N66U router and 2 netgear gigbyte switches.. The issue i am having is most of the clients connect at 192.168.1.xxx which i can access the internet and my home server but I have a handful of clients that connect to a network that has a ip address of 192.168.22.xxx I can't figure out why these clients are connecting to the 192.168.22.xxx...

Here is how I have ito setup surfboard moden>N66U router>switch>switch

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Tim

What are the models of the NG switches? What firmware is the RT-N66U running? Do you have any customizations done to the firmware? Do you have any features enabled other than defaults?

I would recommend you install RMerlin's latest firmware (or a fork thereof, such as john9527's firmware) and then follow the above link.

Try the following in the meantime though.
Turn off your entire network (physically unplug everything; modem, router, switches, clients) for at least 10 minutes.

Turn on the modem, wait 5 minutes.
Turn on the router, wait 5 minutes.
Turn on the switches, wait 5 minutes.

Now, turn on each client in turn and see if it actually connected to your network.

The link above may be useful too for you.

You may want to 'forget' all network ssid's on all of your client devices and create a new ssid (alphanumeric only, non-hidden) so that you know where your clients are connecting to.

they are gigabit switches not gigabyte. gigabyte is 1 billion bytes, 8 bits = 1 byte and it is also a brand. If you transfer data the most you would get is 128MB not 1GB.

it sounds like clients on your network are given the wrong gateway, check your DHCP server and that those clients on the .22 network are not giving out DHCP. Is that network a part of your network or is it outside like through vpn?

You didn't mention if any of those Netgear switches are "managed" or "smart" switchs, but it does look like maybe a VLAN is present, which is setting up another subnet (192.168.22.0/24 maybe?)...

Right now I am running asus-merlin firmware 380.58 on the router with it being all the default settings and the switches are trendnet 8 port unmanaged gigabit switch model# teg-s81g and the second switch is teg-s82g

Being a total noob on networking, how would I check to see if there is a vlan present?

Thanks. I would recommend you turn off all your equipment (after making a new ssid/password combo) for ten minutes as I recommended in post 2.

You didn't mention if the devices that connected to the 192.168.22.xxx network were all wireless or a combo of wired and wireless? I am guessing the latter. ;)

With this issue taken care of, I would still recommend you upgrade to the latest RMerlin version and afterwards, perform a full reset to factory defaults followed by a minimal and manual configuration of the router to secure it and connect to your ISP (the links in post 2 should help).

Yes, it is a combo of wired and wireless that are connecting to the 192.168.22.xxx
I will upgrade to the newest firmware and follow your instruction and post back my results

Thanks for the help

Also, if one has a Chromecast or other Set Top box, try turning that off, just in case...

Ok, so I updated the firmware to latest RMerlin's I changed the ssid and followed your instructions in post #2. I then connected each client one by one and all connected to the network except for 2 that connected to a 192.168.22.xxx address and those clients where a samsung galaxy tab and windows laptop...

Try resetting the network settings for those devices and follow with a full reboot (don't shut down and then start again).

Nope, still didn't work. The only way I can get these devices to connect is if I configure the client to get a static ip address..
