Designed for massive IoT deployments, the newly announced Zigbee Pro 2017 wireless spec will simultaneously support interoperable devices running on the 800-900 MHz range and the 2.4 GHz.

The Zigbee Alliance’s latest offering will provide “longer range, reduced power consumption and lower operating costs for low-data-rate applications ranging from home security and automation, to smart metering and connected lighting,” according to the announcement. This will give manufacturers and designers better flexibility and more options when connecting across, to and between buildings, homes and campuses.

Zigbee? Is this something that smart meters use to communicate with home base, or is that just a local thing?

Zigbee is generally used in a local context since it is low power wireless (lower power even than Bluetooth).
