No Internet Access with RT-N66U

New Around Here
Hi everyone,

I bought a second Asus RT-N66U router for my parents who have a DSL modem. For whatever the reason I cannot figure out why I have no internet access with the new Asus router. I ran the setup wizard and successfully can setup and connect to the network but I get "Limited Network Activity" and have no internet access. I am upgrading from a Linksys WRT54GL that was configured simply by the setup wizard (no additional ISP login required). I know the Asus router is fine since I replaced it with my RT-N66U at my apartment connected to a cable modem and it had internet access. I have tried turning the DSL modem off for 10 minutes to try and reset any settings with no luck. I have configured two routers previously with the DSL connection and never had any issue. Does anyone have any ideas or run into a similar problem? Is it an ISP setting (I have never had to provide any information before), or could the DSL modem simply by incompatible? Thanks.

Hi,

Could be an ISP setting as in my case:
In the past my ISP limited the access for only one PC per contract and from this days they still checking the MAC address of the device connected to the Cable Modem.

Which meanst that I have either to tell them (via web interface) the new MAC address or I tell my Router to fake the WAN address and use the one which is known to my ISP...

On the other hand we had some discussions regarding Modems:
I think the conclusion was that's a good idea to reboot the modem when (after!) you replaced the router. :p

With kind regards
Joe

Limited or no connectivity is a big red flag that you are double natting on the same subnet.

If the DSL modem/router has an IP address of 192.168.1.1 and the asus has an IP address of 192.168.1.1, then you should change one of them to something like 192.168.2.1

Or maybe try resetting the asus to factory defaults. And start your wizard over.

Also, many people have good luck putting their DSL modem/router in to bridge mode. That way, you only have one NAT.

Is this MAC cloning? I tried to mess with it but wasn’t sure how to do it, I need to see if there are directions in the manual.

I have tried resetting the modem both before and after the router and the setup wizard multiple times with no help. The old router also uses 192.168.1.1 so I am guessing that a conflict with IP addresses is not an issue?

Thanks for the suggestions.

What's the IP address of the DSL modem?

I think if you connect a computer directly to the modem and then go to a command prompt.....and type ipconfig /all, you'll be able to find out the modem's IP address and LAN segment.

I suppose you could also try to gain access to the Internet while directly connected to the modem and see how that goes.

I'm not familiar with any DSL ISP's that require or need MAC cloning. At least not in the USA.

MAC Cloning button is on the WAN Tab , right at the bottom under 'Special Requirements from ISP'
