No internet connection when switched on modem & router simultaneously

I usually switched off my modem & router when not in use (going to bed or work). When I need to use it, I'll just flip a switch and the modem & router would be on simultaneously.

At time I just can't get a connection (be it wired or wireless) and the solution is to flip the switch off and on again and the connection would be back.

I'm having this issue since day one and tried all firmwares from stock 3.178 to Merlin's latest 4.260.21, yet still can't resolve it.

Does anybody got a clue? Thanks.

Hard to tell without knowing at least what type of Internet connection you have, but my guess is your modem isn't ready by the time the router is. So if you have a cablemodem that returns a local IP before it can establish the WAN connection, the router probably ends up with that local IP instead.

Turn the modem on, wait 2 mins for it to sync/connect, and after that you can turn the router on.

Thanks Merlin. I'm using 100Mbps fibre optic connection.

Instead of waiting for 2 mins, is there a way to instruct the router to re-establish the WAN connection to obtain the correct IP?

What has anything to do with fiber optics? Have you read the user manual carefully? Always there is certain sequence when more than one device is first powered on going thru self test, initializing, booting, etc. If two devices miss time for hand shaking then they won't come up ready to talk to each other. And any devices always take stress when you turn it on/off increasing the chance of breaking it. I never turn off router/modem/WiFi printer on our home network. Even PC, laptops are on standby. I know it may be couple bucks on my monthly power bill but that's the way it is in my home.

Personally, I would leave the modem on all the time, and just turn off the router if you are worried about security. Modems are designed to be on all the time, and you probably increase the risk of hardware failure by having it turned off and on on a daily basis. Replacing that modem would probably be more expensive and lead to longer downtimes than if it were, for example, your router that were to fail.

Ok, thanks Merlin. Will take your advice :). You're right, I'm more concern of the security.
