I'm using a setup with RT-AC68U in router mode and RT-AC56U in AP mode, both connected with Ethernet backhaul. My mobile telco supports VoWiFi and I have it enabled on my iPhone. VoWiFi calling works fine only as long as I don't roam between my two APs. As soon as I move to another room, the call either goes silent for both parties or the other side can hear me but I can't hear them.

I have:
  • Latest official firmware on both devices.
  • Separate SSIDs for 2.4 and 5 GHz, non-overlapping channels. iPhone only knows my 5 GHz network and it works fine other than VoWiFi. It seems to jump between the APs rather snappily and doesn't seem to have much problems reestablishing TCP connections.
  • Roaming Assistant disabled.
Any chances for any AsusWRT setting to have any impact on that? I realize it could be a PITA to troubleshoot properly but I guess I just hope it to be a known issue (with a known solution).

Use the same SSID for everything...

Different SSID means to the client, this is a different network, so it goes through the whole WiFi attach method, or the device will camp on the original AP that it was associated with when the VoWIFI session was started.

Do you recommend using one SSID for both bands at all times or just for this scenario that OP describes?

I encourage folks to try it - helps with both interband (same AP) and inter AP handovers - VoWIFI can't tolerate a lot of delay/interruption during the handover.
