noob help - Asus RT-AC68R set up as access point?

New Around Here
First let me apologize to the fact that i'm a complete noob when it comes to wireless networking...

i bought an RT-AC68R for my sister in law to use as an access point but i think i've done something wrong. the internet seems to drop frequently but only on the wireless as i can tell.

Can someone please tell me how to set this up as an access point. do i have to make adjustments to the DCHP? Not that I really know what the means, I've just read things where people had to change that to be different from the main router/modem. Again, I'm so sorry, I just don't know this stuff at all but i'm trying to learn and get better.

i've run an CAT5e ethernet cable from their DSL wireless modem (motorola NVG510) to the RT-AC68R in the living room. I plugged that cable into the internet port and i have things like blu-ray, wii and direct tv box plugged into the LAN ports.

it seemed wacky as i was having problems logging in on thru the web browser saying "Web page will now refresh. Changes have been made to the IP address or port number. You will now be disconnected from RT-AC68R. To access the settings of RT-AC68R, reconnect to the wireless network and use the updated IP address and port number"

i was still able to get in sometimes switching over the IE. it changed the log in to 192.168.2.1 I never really switched it over to "access point" mode because everything seemed to be working without switching.

i named the SSID the same as the NVG510 but just changed the channel so they weren't on the same channel. it seemed to have problems when walking to different parts of the house and switching from grabbing the NVG510 to the RT-ac68R but it took a second and would seem to switch over to something usable.

again, please don't burn me, i'm trying hard to understand what i'm doing. i just wanted to help them with better wireless internet because their house is plaster and lath with thick walls the wireless just don't travel well.

i know i'm doing something wrong and there must be something conflicting now because you can see the wireless working but not transmitting internet. (i.e. when i look at my cell phone i get full wireless signal but it's not blue indicating internet) i would turn the rt-ac68r off and on and it would come back.

I'm also not at their house but i get there at least once every other week so i won't be able to check settings right away but having a list of things i should look at when i get there would be helpful.

any tips or advice would be much appreciated.

thanks so much!
