Hi all -- I'm a novice when it comes to hands-on networking. Nonetheless I want to build a LAN in my home by running Cat6a cable throughout. I'm confused about a couple of things:

I've read that you can't "make" Cat6 or 6a cables by hand, and that manufactured patch cables will always be more reliable than anything a technician could do by hand.

I'm confused about what happens when I have to wire up a keystone jack with Cat6a cable. When I do that, am I "making" a cable? I wouldn't be using a coupler, so I'd have to splice and crimp or something. Is that going to work with Cat6a?

Thanks for your help

If you can't "make" cat6/6a cables then how do they wire a building with 6/6a?

Rhetorical question, the fact is you can make your own 6/6a cables. Know which type you're working with and choose your connectors accordingly, test your connections when you're done ;)

Properly terminating CAT6 and above cables require more care than CAT5/5e if you need them to support full 10GbE operation.

Of course you can do the wiring yourself. But read up on the proper techniques first and use connectors to match the cable rating.

Terminating Keystone jacks is much easier than attaching male plugs. If you follow instructions you will be able to get your jacks to work quite well and with a minimum of frustration.
