openvpn client always on

Hi
A newbe question:
I have a openvpn server running on my Asus rt-ac87.
I would like to set my laptop up to always connect to my vpn server and also my iphone.
But when I am home inside my lan it does not connect to my vpn server and also not nessesary, but is there any way to set my laptop up to connect to openvpn at boot so if I am outside my lan it uses vpn and when I am inside my lan it uses my lan?
Has this something to do with loopback? And is it a client setting or server setting?
